As men, we’re wired to take charge—to lead in our families, at work, and in life’s many challenges. It’s natural to want to control outcomes, to plan every move, and to feel responsible for holding everything together. But sometimes, this drive to control can weigh us down, drain our peace, and leave us exhausted. What if real strength isn’t in tightening our grip but in letting go and trusting God to lead the way? Today, let’s dig into what it means to release control and rest in God’s sovereignty.
Scripture:
Proverbs 3:5-6 says it plainly: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Reflection/Teaching:
When I think about control, I realize how easily it can become an idol—a false security that tricks me into believing I’m the one holding the reins of life. But Proverbs challenges that. It calls me, and every man, to trust God fully, not just partially or when it’s convenient. This is tough because control feels like strength. But the Bible flips that idea. Real strength comes from surrender.
Look at Abraham, who stepped into the unknown because he trusted God’s promises. Or Joseph, who endured betrayal and prison, yet trusted God’s plan and rose to lead a nation. Even David, despite his flaws, leaned on God’s guidance when life spiraled beyond his control. These men didn’t control every detail but made a choice daily to trust God’s wisdom over their own.
Trusting God doesn’t mean sitting back and doing nothing. It means choosing faith over fear, peace over anxiety, and submission over stubbornness. It means leading your family, work, and life with the quiet confidence that God’s got the bigger picture, even when you can’t see it.
Application:
So how can a man practically learn to let go and trust God more? Start by surrendering your worries to Him in prayer—don’t just talk to God about your plans, talk to Him about your fears and your desire to control. Meditate on Proverbs 3:5-6 daily until it sinks deep into your heart. When anxiety creeps in, remind yourself that leaning on your own understanding is a trap—God’s path is straight and sure.
Try journaling your control struggles and handing them over to God, physically writing “I trust You” over your concerns. Find a trusted brother in faith to hold you accountable—sometimes verbalizing your struggles helps you surrender them. Remember, this is a daily battle, not a one-time event. Patience with yourself is key.
Prayer:
Father, I confess how often I try to control what only You can control. Help me to trust You fully—with my family, my work, my future. Teach me to surrender my fears and my need for control. Fill me with peace and courage to walk the path You’ve set, confident that You make my way straight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
