Introduction
Following Jesus isn’t a popularity contest. It’s a call to radical transformation that often puts you at odds with both the world and, at times, the very leaders who claim to represent Him. We like to talk about the blessings of discipleship—the peace, the purpose, the eternal life—but we rarely mention the cost. And yet, Jesus was clear: following Him means rejection, discomfort, and sometimes even persecution.
But here’s the truth: it’s worth it. The reward of knowing Christ far outweighs the temporary discomfort of being misunderstood or disliked.
Scripture
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” —John 15:18 (ESV)
Reflection
Jesus didn’t sugarcoat the cost of discipleship. In Luke 9:57–62, He tells would-be followers that following Him means giving up comfort, delaying personal plans, and sometimes even severing family ties. He wasn’t trying to scare people away; He was making sure they understood the seriousness of the commitment.
The Apostle Paul echoes this in Philippians 3:8, where he considers everything a loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus. For Paul, the cost was imprisonment, beatings, and eventually martyrdom. Yet he counted it all as gain because of the eternal reward.Desiring God
In today’s world, the cost might look different. It could mean losing friends, facing ridicule at work, or being ostracized by family. But the principle remains the same: following Jesus often puts you on a path that the world doesn’t understand and sometimes actively opposes.
Application
So, what does this mean for you? It means being prepared to stand firm in your faith, even when it’s unpopular. It means prioritizing your relationship with Christ over worldly approval. It means counting the cost and choosing Jesus anyway.
This doesn’t mean you go looking for conflict or wear persecution as a badge of honor. But it does mean you live authentically, speak truth in love, and don’t compromise your beliefs to fit in. It means being willing to be disliked, even by fellow Christians, if it means staying true to the gospel.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the example of Jesus, who endured rejection and suffering for my sake. Help me to follow Him faithfully, even when it’s hard. Give me the courage to stand firm in my convictions, the wisdom to navigate opposition with grace, and the strength to endure hardship for Your name’s sake. May I always remember that the cost of following You is nothing compared to the joy of knowing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Thoughts
Following Jesus is not for the faint of heart. It’s a call to radical discipleship that may cost you the approval of the world and even the favor of some Christian leaders. But the reward—an eternal relationship with Christ—is worth every sacrifice.
